Placement
Aera’s elegant design blends well into any design environment and can be placed on shelves, consoles, or simply hidden away discreetly. Small enough to easily disguise; beautiful enough to put on display.
Its placement is perhaps the most important element to ensure optimal scenting performance and control. Identify a location where the fragrance molecules from Aera can use, rather than compete with, the natural air circulation in a room. This is particularly true in air-conditioned spaces. Also consider windows, doors, and heating or cooling vents. The best location for Aera is “upwind” of the source of the airflow.
Follow these steps to find the ideal spot:
- Stand near the location you would like to place your Aera diffuser.
- Light a candle or match for a moment then blow it out.
- Note the direction the smoke travels.
- Does the smoke move towards the area you want to scent? Great. If not, choose another location and test again.
Quick Tips: Air flow will change if windows and doors are opened. Try different locations and scent levels until you are happy with the scent coverage. Give Aera a little time to equalize the scent after any change in location or scent level.
Please consider the following when choosing a location for your Aera.
- Wherever you decide to place your Aera diffuser, make sure it cannot be tipped over. This may cause some fragrance liquid to leak.
- Keep your diffuser out of reach of children and pets.
- Avoid getting fragrance liquid on wood or delicate surfaces.
- If you want your Aera diffuser to be discreet, it can be located behind or under pieces of furniture, provided there is about ten inches (25cm) of space above the diffuser and plenty of air circulation.
- The location of Aera MUST NOT be near an HVAC return grill, exhaust fan/vent, or open door or window through which air is leaving the space you wish to scent. Remember, you want Aera to work with the natural air circulation, not against it.
Set Up
Positioning Aera in the room is worth careful consideration. Please see the above section ‘Placement’ for greater detail.
- Place your Aera diffuser on a flat surface in a place where it is unlikely to be knocked over.
- Connect Aera to power by plugging the power cord into the jack located next to the ON/OFF button on the back of the diffuser and plugging the other end into a standard wall outlet. The tapered power cord insert should be flush with the smooth exterior of your Aera diffuser when plugged in correctly.
- Your diffuser should turn on automatically when plugged in. Look for one or more of the LED lights on top to illuminate.
- If not, press the ON/OFF button next to the jack on the back of the diffuser.
TIP: If your planned placement of Aera is outside your normal reach, connect the power and insert the capsule on a convenient, flat surface first and then move Aera to the desired location. Unplugging Aera will not affect any programming.

Playing a fragrance capsule
- Cut open the bag holding the fragrance capsule (it will not tear).
- Holding the capsule upright, gently remove the bottom (larger, white) plug first. Do not force the plugs out as a drop or two of fragrance may come with it.
- Slowly remove the smaller (red) plug from the top of the capsule. Pulling too fast could create a vacuum effect that may release drops of fragrance.
- Insert the fragrance capsule into the diffuser and press down about a ¼ inch. When inserted properly, the capsule will start to move down on its own.
Quick Tips: Do not force the capsule into the diffuser. Always remove both plugs from the capsule before placing it in the diffuser.
The plugs may have a tiny amount of pure fragrance residue. Use a tissue to remove and do not place on wood or delicate surfaces. Avoid skin contact with fragrance oils.
Replace plugs to reseal fragrance capsule when not in use.
Ejecting/changing a fragrance capsule
You may change the fragrance you’re playing at any time. To play a new fragrance, replace the fragrance capsule or to change fragrances, press the eject button, wait for the lift mechanism to raise the capsule, and pull up lightly to release. (To prevent fragrance oils from leaking, seal capsules with both plugs before storing.)
Operation
A quiet hum means the diffuser is operating properly. Aera emits a dry vapor of fragrance molecules, known as microdroplets, at timed intervals, which allows you to continuously experience scenting throughout the room. Aera will run intermittently according to the level indicated by the LED lights.
IMPORTANT: Do not lean in close to the diffuser to smell the fragrance output when Aera is in operation. Instead, wave air towards your nose with an open hand to experience the fragrance.
Adjusting the scent strength
Aera is a high-performance, fully adjustable diffuser capable of scenting rooms from 50 to 1000 square feet. The ten LED lights arranged in an arc on the top of the Aera diffuser indicate the scent strength setting. One LED light is suitable for the smallest spaces and ten is capable of scenting a large room (up to 1000 square feet when optimally placed).
Once the fragrance capsule is in the diffuser, you may adjust the scent level to match the room size, air flow, and your preferences. We recommend starting at the middle level (5 LED lights lit) and slowly turning it up or down from there to find your desired scent effect.
- APP Adjust the fragrance strength from the home screen or diffuser screen in the app, by pressing the “+” and “-.”
- MANUAL Adjust the fragrance strength manually by pressing the “+” and “-“ buttons.
Quick Tips: Increasing the scent level will lead to a stronger, more noticeable fragrance effect in your space as well as expanding the range of the fragrance effect.
The following chart recommends the strength levels that work best with different sized rooms. We also recommend testing a few scent levels until you are happy with the fragrance effect in the room.
Powering On/Off
- APP Tap the Off/On button on the diffuser card on the home screen or on the diffuser screen to toggle between powering on and off your diffuser.
- MANUAL Press the ON/OFF button next to the jack on the back of the diffuser.
Using Sessions
Use the session function to play fragrance for a set number of hours and automatically turn off.
- APP From the home screen, tap the diffuser you want to start a session for to enter the diffuser/controls page. Tap 2, 4 or 8hr and tap ‘Start a Session’ button. To stop a session before the session ends, tap ‘End Session.’
- MANUAL Press the session button once to start a 2-hr session, twice for a 4-hr session and three times for an 8-hr session. The strength setting lights will light up to indicate the length of the session set, flash twice, and then return to indicating the scent strength level.
- To stop a session before the session ends, press eject.
NOTE: The strength setting lights will pulse slowly during a session.
Setting Scent Schedules
Once you have signed into the app and connected your Aera (see ‘Connecting to the App’) you can create schedules for a custom scenting experience at the days and times that suit your preference.
The scheduling function has the capability to include different operating periods and strength settings in the same day. Each operating period can have its own scent level. For example, you might have a schedule for a few hours in the morning at level 5 and another for several hours at night on level 2.
TIP: Scheduling your Aera diffuser to scent only when someone is present can reduce your fragrance usage and cost.
- Open the AeraForHome app. From the home screen, tap on the diffuser you would like to set a schedule for.
- The diffuser home screen will open. Tap ‘Schedules’ from the menu.
- Tap ‘Set New Schedule’
- Select the times to turn on/off.
- Select the days of the week you would like the schedule to run.
- Select what scent level you would like it to play.
- Tap, ‘Save’ to complete.
NOTE: One schedule cannot span across multiple days. If you want a schedule to run past Midnight, set two schedules with the desired times. For example, a schedule from 8PM to 3AM would be set as two schedules: 8:00PM to 11:59PM and 12:00AM to 3:00AM.
User-Maintenance Instructions
- Aera is a precision engineered electronic appliance. Treat it like you would any other high-tech device, such as a laptop.
- Do not place or store the Aera diffuser or capsules in extreme heat (more than 130° F) or in freezing temperatures. Aera is designed to work best at room temperature – and only indoors.
- Do not drop Aera on the floor.
- Do not place it near water or let it get wet.
- It is OK to dust Aera with a damp cloth, but do not attempt to clean or otherwise service Aera as it could harm your diffuser.
- Do not paint or otherwise try to alter the color of the outer cover.
- NEVER transport the Aera diffuser with the unsealed fragrance capsule inside.
- Do not store unused fragrance capsules without first re-inserting plugs to prevent fragrance leakage. Fragrance oils can damage wood and other delicate surfaces.
TROUBLESHOOTING
My diffuser is not emitting continuous fragrance
Aera diffusers release fragrance in regular intervals to provide the ideal amount of fragrance for any room. The frequency and duration of these intervals is based on the scent setting you choose for your diffuser. For example, a diffuser set to level 1 will emit fragrance in short bursts spaced widely apart to guarantee consistent scenting of a smaller room. A diffuser set to level 10 will emit fragrance in longer bursts spaced closer together to ensure the consistent scenting of a larger room.
My fragrance does not fill my space
There are a couple reasons why your diffuser may not be properly scenting your space, but we can help you diagnose the issue.
First, check to make sure that your diffuser is on (with the power cord inserted flush with the diffuser) and working properly by turning up the scent level one notch and listening for Aera’s motor. As you hear the motor, check to see if you can smell the fragrance beside the diffuser by waving fragrance towards your nose with an open hand.
The airflow in a room and where the Aera diffuser is placed can have a significant impact on your scenting experience. There are many variables that affect airflow such as windows, doors, and heating or cooling vents. The best location for Aera is where it takes advantage of your room’s natural airflow. Follow these steps to find the ideal spot:
- Stand near the location you would like to place your Aera diffuser.
- Light a candle or match for a moment then blow it out.
- Note the direction that the smoke travels.
- Does the smoke move towards the area you want to scent? Great. If not, choose another location and test again.
If you do not smell fragrance even while standing near your diffuser, check to make sure that the red plug atop the fragrance capsule is removed. If it has not been removed, the capsule is sealed and pressurized. Do not remove the red plug while your fragrance capsule is inserted into the diffuser. Eject the fragrance capsule from your diffuser and then carefully remove the red plug over a sink or garbage can (fragrance may leak).
If neither of these solutions solve your issue, contact Aera Customer Care by email at support@aeraforhome.com.

Aera’s scenting coverage is not meeting my expectations
Firstly, we are sorry if your Aera is ever underwhelming, and we would love to help. If you are not experiencing an even scent effect throughout the room in which you have placed your diffuser, this issue most likely can be remedied by relocating your diffuser to a position with more optimal air circulation. It could be that the natural air circulation in your room is preventing Aera’s scent effect from diffusing properly.
Identify a placement location where the fragrance molecules from Aera can use, rather than compete with, this natural air circulation. The best location for Aera is “upwind” of the source of the airflow. For more detailed information, read our "Placement" instructions in the above section.
You may also try increasing the amount of fragrance in the room by increasing the strength setting. We recommend settings 1-3 for small rooms such as bathrooms, settings 3-5 for medium-sized rooms such as bedrooms, and settings 5-10 for large rooms such as living rooms.
But keep in mind that these are just suggestions - depending on the size of your room, your device's placement, and the perceived strength of the fragrance, a greater scent setting could allow for an improved scenting experience.
Additionally, please keep in mind that Aera's scent effect cannot easily travel between rooms.
If none of this advice sufficiently addresses your issues or helps optimize Aera's role within your home, please contact Aera Customer Care by email at support@aeraforhome.com.
HEALTH AND SAFETY
Safety
When used as directed, the ambient scent or aroma effect from the Aera diffuser is safe for continuous inhalation. The Monell Chemical Senses Center in Philadelphia, USA reported the results of a 3-year trial to answer the question, “Does exposure to continuous indoor fragrance result in an acute impact on health?” The answer is NO. The trial was done with a Prolitec commercial device using the same technology as Aera.
Pet Safety
Concerns have been raised that essential oils (also known as naturals) may be harmful to pets. While there is no scientific evidence to support this, as pet owners ourselves, we take the assertion seriously. The ultra-low trace quantity in the ambient air should not be harmful to pets. If there is concern, a veterinarian should be consulted.

Directions for proper use
Aera creates a hypoallergenic ambient scent effect using only trace quantities of fragrance oil in the air. However, concentrations are much higher within 12 inches of the fragrance oil output hole on the capsule during operation.
Keep noses of all kinds at least 12 inches away from the diffuser when in operation.
Always keep out of reach of children and pets.
Use only as directed.
Instructions Pertaining to a Risk of Fire, Electric Shock, or Injury to Persons
- Aera is built to be plugged into an 110VAC or 220VAC power outlet.
- Aera must be used only with the approved and included power cord.
- The UL and CE compliant power supply converts power to 15DC to power the diffuser.
- The diffuser must only be powered at Safety Extra Low Voltage (SELV).
- If the power cord is damaged, it must be replaced by the manufacturer, its service agent, or similarly qualified persons to avoid a potential hazard.
Diffuser Precautions
When using electric products, basic precautions should always be followed, including the following:
- Read all instructions in this online User Guide before using Aera.
- Do not put fingers or objects other than Aera fragrance capsules into the product.
- The diffuser must be operated in an upright or vertical position.
- To reduce the risk of injury, close supervision is necessary when this product is used in the presence of children.
- Never put your nose close to the output of Aera. The fragrance is highly concentrated within 12 inches of the diffuser. The improper inhalation of high concentrations of fragrance may cause irritation including watery eyes, headache, cough, and upper respiratory discomfort.
- Unplug Aera before cleaning or moving.
- It is recommended that the user periodically remove the diffuser power plug from the wall to test and reset the GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupter) breaker in the center of the wall outlet.
